An Introduction to Iconography – For Kids – Aug 2021

Introduction to South Indian Hindu Iconography & Symbolism

Iconography, the study of sculptures and icons is one of the most crucial aspects of Art History. India, a land of multitudes of sculptures, represent Gods, Demi-Gods, Ascetics, Mythological Characters, etc. Each sculpture has many layers, with many icons and stories coming together, weaving beautiful poetic imagery. Each sculpture is not born from a single idea. There are multiple factors like concepts, symbols, literature, history, aesthetics, geography, etc. that contribute to a sculpture.

I believe, that preserving starts with knowledge sharing. This workshop has been crafted with the intention to capture young minds and introduce them to the vastness of Indian Cultural History. I start with South Indian Hindu Iconography and Symbolism to limit the scope, so we take one step at a time.

So what will the kids aged 8-12 learn in this six-part online workshop?

  • Understand the various forms of Hindu gods and goddesses by studying sculptures
  • How to identify a particular sculpture by understanding iconography
  • How to differentiate one sculpture from another

This workshop will be conducted in English. To ensure effective learning, this workshop has limited registrations/spots.
